The Consortium for AI in Registry-Based Image Epidemiology Research in Breast Cancer (CARE-B) is an international research collaboration bringing together expertise from the University of Edinburgh, Karolinska Institutet, Lund University and Zealand University Hospital. CARE-B combines large-scale clinical registry data with digital histopathology images and molecular information to develop and validate artificial intelligence approaches for breast cancer research. The project aims to improve how breast cancers are characterised, identify patients at higher risk of recurrence, predict response to treatment, and better understand the biological variation both between and within tumours by linking these complementary data sources. A key goal is to develop scalable and cost-effective precision diagnostic tools that can support more personalised treatment decisions and widen access to precision diagnostics.
Edinburgh Cancer Informatics contributes a large real-world breast cancer cohort alongside expertise in population-level cancer data, treatment-effect evaluation, prognostic model validation and health economics. Within CARE-B, the Edinburgh team will help test whether new AI-derived markers and prediction models remain reliable when applied to routine clinical populations and real-world healthcare settings. The team will also contribute health economics expertise, helping to assess the potential value and cost-effectiveness of AI-based approaches and their potential to complement existing molecular diagnostics. This work closely aligns with the wider mission of Edinburgh Cancer Informatics: using routinely collected health data, advanced analytics and collaborative research to generate evidence that can improve cancer diagnosis, treatment and patient outcomes.
